Shady Hollow personnel have started installing new automated smart water meters in Shady Hollow. These meters will transmit water usage data directly and securely to the Shady Hollow MUD, allowing you to:

  • View your usage online once the customer portal is available
  • Detect leaks or unusual usage more quickly
  • Get more accurate, timely billing

What you need to do:
No action is required. Our operator will notify you before installation and will knock on your door prior to temporarily shutting off your water to replace the meter. If no one answers and water is in use, they’ll return later.

After installation, you might notice a brief air “burp” or residue when turning on your water for the first time— just let it run briefly until it clears.

The SHMUD covers all installation costs. Refer to our FAQ for further information.

Frequently asked questions

How long will the meter change out project take?
The meter change out process is estimated to take about 1 year to complete the entire neighborhood.

How will I know I have a new meter?
Personnel will notify you they are changing your meter, or if you are not home when the change occurs you will see the new black plastic lid on the water meter box.

Will my water bill change?
Whenever a new meter is installed, either a smart meter or a manual-read meter, there is a chance that your bill may increase. Many of the water meters are more than 20-years old and at the end of their functional life. As meters age, their accuracy begins to decline. The new meter will accurately reflect your consumption, and as a result, may report higher billable water usage.

What are the benefits of new meter technology?
This technology offers more consistent and accurate readings and 24-hour leak detection. After installations are completed, SHMUD customers will have access to a web portal allowing customers to easily monitor their water consumption, compare current usage to previous periods, set e-mail and text alerts and set budget and conservation goals.

What is a smart meter?
A smart meter is part of a system that uses cellular technology to send your meter readings to the SHMUD.
